Recent studies have shown that very young children are getting more cavities than ever before. To catch potential problems as early as possible, experts now recommend taking your child to their first dentist appointment when they reach their first birthday.
What to Expect
At your child’s first dental visit, the dentist or hygienist will ask you questions about the child’s:
- Overall health history
- Oral habits (such as thumb sucking)
- Cavity risks (including diet, family history, and hygiene habits)
The dentist will then examine your child’s teeth, gums, cheeks, and tongue. Typically, you and the dentist will sit facing each other, and you will hold the child on your lap and lean their head back onto the dentist’s lap. If needed, the dentist or hygienist may also:
- Clean the child’s teeth
- Administer fluoride treatment
- Schedule followup care
